How to compress an image for a job application online

Most job portals reject your application if your photo is over 100KB. Here's how to compress it to the exact size in under 30 seconds — without uploading it anywhere.

Why job portals limit image size

Big employers and government recruiters get millions of applications. Letting everyone upload 5MB selfies would fill their servers in days. So they cap photo uploads at 50KB, 100KB, or 200KB — and reject anything bigger.

The problem: most modern phone photos are 2MB+. You need to shrink yours to exactly the limit while keeping the face recognizable.

Step 1 — Check the form's requirement

Read the upload field carefully. Common requirements:

  • Photo size: 20KB – 50KB (most government jobs)
  • Signature: 10KB – 20KB
  • Resume / certificate: 100KB – 500KB
  • Format: usually JPG; PNG sometimes accepted

Note both the size limit AND the dimensions (e.g. "200×200 pixels"). If dimensions are listed, you may need to crop first.

Step 2 — Open ImageCompressor

Go to imagecompressor.app. There's no signup, no download, no install. Just the tool.

Drag your photo in, or click to browse. JPG, PNG, WebP, and HEIC (iPhone photos) all work.

Step 3 — Set the exact KB target

Click one of the preset buttons (20KB, 50KB, 100KB, 200KB, 500KB, 1MB) — or type a custom value. If your form says "max 75KB," type 75 in the custom field.

Hit "Compress all" and you'll see a live preview of the compressed image with the new size. The tool uses binary search to hit your target within ~2%.

Step 4 — Download and upload to the form

Click the download button on each file. The output is always JPG at the target size. Upload it to the form, and you're done.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Compressing too aggressively — going to 10KB when the limit is 100KB makes the photo blurry. Hit the limit, not way under.
  • Wrong dimensions — many forms also specify pixel dimensions. Use a separate cropper first if needed.
  • Wrong format — convert PNG to JPG if the form needs JPG. Our tool always outputs JPG.
  • Uploading the original by mistake — double-check the filename ends in something like "compressed-100kb.jpg".

FAQ

Will the compressed image still look good?

For most photos compressed to 50KB+, yes. Below 30KB faces start to blur. Always preview before submitting.

Is my photo private?

Yes — the entire compression happens in your browser. Your image is never uploaded to our servers.

Can I compress multiple documents at once?

Yes — drop all your application files (photo, signature, certificates) at once and compress them in one go.
