What Upwork takes

Upwork's service fee, in plain numbers

Since May 2025, Upwork replaced its flat 10% freelancer service fee with a variable 0–15% rate set per contract. The exact percentage is shown when you submit a proposal and is locked for that contract. Because it varies, the calculator lets you set the rate to match what Upwork quoted you — a common default is 10%, so a $100 contract would leave you $90 before withdrawal costs.

Clients pay separate fees too — a marketplace fee and a small contract initiation fee — but those come out of the client's side and do not reduce your payout. What lands in your Upwork account is the contract amount minus your service fee; withdrawing to Payoneer or a bank then has its own cost, which you can add here.

How it works

Three steps to your real Upwork payout

01

Enter the contract amount

Type what the client is billed. Pick your currency if you think in PKR, GBP, EUR, or INR.

02

Set your service fee rate

Match the 0–15% rate Upwork quoted on your contract. Add a withdrawal fee if you cash out via Payoneer or a bank.

03

Read your take-home

See what you keep and the effective rate, or switch to reverse mode to price a bid for a target payout.

Worked examples

Upwork take-home at a 10% service fee

Contract amount10% service fee → you keep
$50$5.00 fee → you keep $45.00
$100$10.00 fee → you keep $90.00
$500$50.00 fee → you keep $450.00
$1,000$100.00 fee → you keep $900.00
$2,000$200.00 fee → you keep $1,800.00

Your actual rate may be higher or lower than 10% — set it to match your contract. At 5% a $1,000 contract leaves $950; at 15% it leaves $850. Add a withdrawal fee to see the amount that reaches your bank.

How much does Upwork take?

Upwork's freelancer service fee is a variable 0–15% per contract since May 2025, replacing the old flat 10%. The rate is disclosed when you bid and locked for that contract, so set the calculator to the exact percentage Upwork showed you.

Price a bid for a target payout

Switch to reverse mode and enter the amount you want to keep. The calculator works out the contract amount to bid so that after Upwork's service fee your take-home matches your goal — handy when you have a firm rate in mind.

Don't forget withdrawal costs

Your Upwork balance still has to reach your bank. Payoneer charges Pakistani freelancers 3% to withdraw, and direct transfers or wires have their own fees. Turn on the withdrawal fee to see your true take-home.
